Interview de Slomosa

Je ne sais plus comment j'ai découvert Slomosa et son premier album éponyme, mais je sais que c'est celui qui a le plus chatouillé mes écoutilles pendant la période Covid. Des titres comme 'Horses', 'Kevin' et la pépite 'There is nothing new under the sun' ont le don de vous donner la pêche tout en vous dépaysant. Car oui, des Norvégiens qui se retrouvent dans le haut du panier du 'desert rock' / 'stoner rock' (appelez ça comme voulez) avec des compos rafraîchissantes et aucune dune à se mettre sous les doigts de pieds, se devaient de créer leur propre étiquette, aussi inutile soit-elle, histoire de coller à l'ironie d'un marketing désuet : ce sera la 'Toundra Rock'. Et il risque bien de vous faire gigoter vos petits corps en cadence dans les mois qui viennent !

L'interview s'est déroulée pendant la dernière partie du set de [g]Stöner[/g] dans la salle de détente juste à côté de la scène, ce qui a rendu la réécoute de la conversation assez chaotique...

 

Tout d'abord laissez-moi vous dire que votre album est l'un de ceux que j'ai le plus écoutés depuis que je l'ai découvert pendant un des confinements !

Slomosa: Merci!

Sur votre page Facebook vous décrivez la Norvège, en référence au 'desert rock' que vous pratiquez, comme le pays le moins désertique du monde : c'est la première fois que vous venez au Luxembourg non?

Slomosa : aha oui !

Je n'ai trouvé aucune interview de vous, ni beaucoup d'information vous concernant...

Marie Moe (basse): En fait c'est plus ou moins notre première interview !

Benjamin Berdous (chant / guitare): Oui... on avait juste faite un passage dans une radio étudiante et quelques articles dans des journaux locaux mais c'est tout.

Et bien je suis content d'être le premier alors ! Pouvez-vous nous dire comment s'est formé le groupe ?

Benjamin: En fait, tout à commencé par des jam sessions vers 2016, j'habitais avec le premier guitariste du groupe, Anders, on était en colocation et on a commencé à jouer des riffs inspirés du premier album des [g]Queens of the Stone Age[/g]. On a eu un premier batteur et un premier bassiste, avant qu'en 2019 je ne me retrouve seul et que je cherche de nouveaux membres. Tor (Tor Erik Bye – guitare) était un ami commun avec Anders, donc je lui ai naturellement demandé de me rejoindre. Et puis j'espérais vraiment que Marie et Jard (Jard Hole – batterie) complète le line-up, j'ai été soulagé quand ils ont accepté.

Que signifie Slomosa ?

Ça vient de slow motion/slomo. C'était une private joke, on se charriait d'être tous très lents à faire avancer les choses... Et Anders était fan de Pantera, Sepultura et ces groupes en 'A', du coup on a mixé tout ça et ça a donné Slomosa.

C'est comment d'être dans un groupe de rock en Norvège ? Est-ce similaire à la Suède où l’État aide beaucoup les musiciens, sur le plan financier notamment?

Benjamin : C'est probablement encore mieux qu'en Suède !

Jard : Oui spécialement pour les cours de musique, l’État les paye et ça c'est cool !

Tor : Mais ça n'est pas automatique non plus, vous devez quand même présenter un dossier pour détailler votre projet etc... mais oui c'est cool !

Vous avez débuté et clos votre set ce soir avec de nouveaux titres, j'imagine que vous travaillez sur un nouvel album ? On peut l'espérer pour bientôt ?

Benjamin : Je pense que ce sera pour l'année prochaine.

Benjamin, tu paraissais prendre bien plus de plaisir sur les nouveaux titres, qui d'ailleurs sonnent plus heavy tout en gardant ce groove caractéristique: tu es déjà fatigué du premier album ?

B: Pour être tout à fait honnête, je me sentais fatigué ce soir, c'est peut-être ça. Parce que je ne suis pas fatigué par les titres plus vieux, l'album est sortit pendant le Covid, du coup on ne l'avait presque pas joué en concerts, jusqu'à cette tournée.

Marie, toi tu semblais vraiment t'éclater sur ta basse avec tes cheveux dans les yeux tout le set ou presque!

M: Ahah oui mais c'est nouveau pour moi ça aussi! Au début du tour j'avais les cheveux attachés et je devais me retenir un peu plus inconsciemment, mais maintenant je suis plsu à l'aise comme ça et c'est cool!

Tu as un peu chanté sur 'In My Mind's Desert', est-ce que c'est quelque chose que vous allez développer sur le prochain LP ?

M: Oui ça c'est la version live de la chanson. Et oui c'est une possibilité que je chante plus, on verra...

Aucun groupe de stoner avec une voix féminine ne me vient à l'esprit... mais ça pourrait être pas mal !

Marie : moi non plus, mais oui ça pourrait être bien.

Tor, pendant le concert, avec ta Flying V, ton son et ton style, tu m'as fait penser au guitariste de [g]Greenleaf[/g] et [g]Dozer[/g].

Tor : ah oui Tommi ! Ah je prends ça comme un compliment, merci!

Comment vous avez fait pour vous retrouver sur cette tournée à ouvrir pour Stöner ?

Tor : tout simplement, on partage le même tourneur.

Comment se passe cette tournée au final ?

Marie : et bien c'est notre première vraie tournée ! On avait seulement fait une mini tournée de trois dates auparavant. Et pour une première tournée, les heures passées ensemble en dehors des concerts se passent bien jusqu'ici, et on redoutait un peu ça, alors c'est cool !

Bon dites-moi si je dois contacter un psy, mais sur la pochette de votre album, je vois la carte de la Norvège dans la jambe gauche du chameau : j'ai rêvé ?

Tous : quoi ? Ou ça ? (ils regardent tous la pochette).

Benjamin : c'est vrai que ça y ressemble ! Mais je ne crois pas que l'artiste, une amie, ait fait ça exprès, ou alors elle nous l'a caché ahah !

OK... bon, quelques questions légères pour terminer cet entretien : avez-vous eu des moments « Spinal Tap » sur cette tournée ?

 Jard : Tor tu en as eu un sympa !

 Tor : Ah oui ahah. Sur une date en Allemagne le neveu d'une amie est venu dans le public et à un moment il a brandit une pancarte en Norvégien disant un truc du style « Tor tu es trop bandant! » ou un truc dans le genre, et ça m'a tellement fait marrer que j'en ai foiré quelques notes sur ma guitare aha !

Benjamin : la surprise nous a bien fait rigoler, j'en ai aussi foiré mon chant !

En tournée la nourriture n'est pas toujours au top, qu'est-ce que vous souhaiteriez manger en là tout de suite ?

Tous : des raspeballer !!!

Des quoi ?

Tor : des raspeballer ! C'est une sorte de dumpling de patates remplis de lardons, un plat typique de Norvège.

Enfin, si vous pouviez avoir 5 invités de votre choix pour un dîner, vous prendriez qui ?

Benjamin : Hitler, pour lui demander des explications...

A ce moment-là [g]Stöner[g/] termine son concert et le trio déboule dans la pièce, Brant Bjork et Ryan Gut s'affale dans le canapé alors que Nick Oliveri se joint à la table d'à côté et commence à nous raconter l'histoire d'un buveur de sang turc, une sorte de Dracula... enfin un truc farfelu dns le gendre, pour ce que j'en ai compris !

 Benjamin: il nous faudrait Nick Oliveri aussi ahah

 Jard: Ah oui il te faut Nick à ta table!

Tor : Et la mère de Jard aussi, elle est trop cool !

Marie : moi je voudrais Harry Potter !

Benjamin : et l'écrivaine Norvégienne Amalie Skram, elle est incroyable...

OK c'est le dîner le plus chelou que j'ai eu en réponse !

Tous: ça pourrait être fun!

I can't recall where I discovered Slomosa and their first LP, but I can tell it's the album that shook my ears the most during the Covid period. Titles as 'Horses', 'Kevin' or the favourite 'There is nothing new under the sun' have that feel-good kick while taking you somewhere else. Yes, Norvegians guys reaching the cream of the crap from 'desert/stoner/whatever-you-call-it rock' with fresh songs while they don't have any dunes to step on, needed to create their own category, as useless as it can be, to ironically fit the music marketing of the still growing stoner rock scene: that is 'Toundra Rock'. And I'm sure the music will shake your neck from now on!

The interview took place in the chill-out room right behind the stage during the last part of the [g]Stöner[/g] show, which mostly covered the recording of the conversation...

Guys, let me tell you that your LP is probably the one I've listen the most since I discovered it during the lockdown !

Slomosa : Thanks !

You define yourself as a band « from Norway, the least desert country in the world »... I guess you never came to Luxembourg right ?

Slomosa : ahah yes that's true !

I couldn't find any interview from you guys, and really not much information about the band... Could you please tell us where and how the band got born? Did you know each other before to join ?

Benjamin Berdous (singer, guitarist) : well, it all started with jam sessions we had with my friend Anders when we were sharing a flat few years ago. We just loved the first [g]Queens of the Stone Age[/g] album and tried to play similar riffs all the time. Then we started the band with others guys and then in 2019, I had to find other members. I knew Tor (Tor Erik Bye - guitar)) who was a common friend with Anders, and I thought of Marie (Marie Moe - bass) and Jard (Jard Hole – drums) who I knew from other bands and I really was hoping they'd accept to join the band.

What Slomosa means ?

B: It comes from slow motion/slowmo, as we always made fun we were slow to do anything ahah ! And Anders was a fan of Pantera, Sepultura and all those bands in A, so we kind of mixed the whole thing to Slomosa.

How is it to be a young rock band in Norway ? Do you also have a system like in Sweden where the state really helps financially, for rehearsal rooms, music lessons etc ?

B: Yes it's probably even better than in Sweden !

Jard: Yes, especially for the music lessons, the state can pay for them and it's great !

Tor: But it's not guaranteed for anyone either, you have to present your file with references, your project etc... but yes it's cool !

You played new songs tonight. I guess you are working on a new LP ? When could we expect it ?

B : Well, I guess it should be out next year hopefully.

Benjamin, you were looking like having more fun with the new stuff, which I felt have heavier (but still groovy) riffs : are you already tired of playing your « old » songs ?

B: Well to be completely honest with you I was feeling a bit tired tonight, so maybe that's why. But we released the album during the covid, so we didn't play many concerts until this tour, so I can't be tired of playing those ones live really.

Marie, on your side you seemd to really enjoy it on your bass, behind your hair the whole set.

M: Ahah yes, but that's kind of new for me as well. At the begining I had my hair tight and I probably was less confortable on stage but now I let my hair free and I feel cool!

You sang a line during 'In my mind's desert', which you don't on the album : would it be something you would do on the new album ?

M: yes that was live version ! Yeah I think so, we'll see what we can do but that's a possibility yes...

I can't think of any stoner band with a great female lead singer right now, but that could be a good thing !

M: yes I don't see either !

B: Maybe we'll change that!

Tor, on stage, with your Flying V, you reminded me of the guitarist from Greenleaf...

T: Oh yes Tommi ! I take that as a compliment, thanks !

How did you end up opening for Stöner ?

T: We just share them same booking agency.

How is the tour going so far ?

M: Well it's our first tour ever ! We only had 3 concerts in a raw before that... But life around the shows is going well for our first time together. We were kind of wondering around that but finally it's cool !

Tell me if I should go to see a shrink, but on the cover of your LP, I see a hidden map of Norway in the left leg of the camel. Like the « naked man » was at the same place on the camel on the pack of some famous cigarettes... am I right ?

ALL: What ? Where ? (they all check the cover),

B: that looks like it but I don't know if it's really that ahah ! We'll have to ask Elsa, the artist, who is a friend...

(After checking with Elsa Enestig, she confirmed that was not her intention)

OK... I have some useless questions to end this interview...

Did you have any « spinal tap » moment during this tour yet ?

J: Tor you had one, with the sign !

T: Oh yes ahah that was funny. On a date in Germany there was the nephew of a friend in the audience and he suddenly lifted his sign where he wrote something like « Tor you're so hot !» and I started to laugh and missed a few notes on my guitar !

B: it was really funny, I couldn't avoid laughing while singing aha

On tour the food is not always so good: what dish would you pick right now ?

ALL : Raspeballer !!!

Baller what ?

T: Raspeballer! It's a traditional Norwegian dish, some kind of dumplings filled with bacon.

Finally, if you could have a dinner with 5 persons of your choice, dead or alive, who would you pick ?

B: Hitler, to ask him : « what the fuck man ? Why all that ?» ?

(Brant Bjork and Ryan Gut from [g]Stöner[/g] arrive in the room after their show. Nick Oliveri follows and sits next to us, starts to mumble a story about some turkish guy drinking blood, like Dracula... for what I understood !)

J: Nick Oliveri !

B: yeah we'd need Nick Oliveri at the table ahah

T: Jard's mum ! She's so cool !

M: Harry Potter !!!

B: and Amalie Skram, a cult Norwegian author.

OK guys, that's the weirdest dinner I've had as an answer !
